Travelling to Tampere

A big city by Finnish standards, with almost 210,000 inhabitants, Tampere still manages to feel like a small town. In the centre, everything is within walking distance. Google map.

Air travel

Some 170 km north of Helsinki, Tampere has direct flight connections with Stockholm, Copenhagen, Riga, London, Dublin, Frankfurt, Bremen, and Milan.

Tampere Airport is located at Pirkkala, 17 kilometers southwest from the city centre.

Ryanair flights arrive at and depart from Terminal 2, whereas all other airlines (e.g. Finnair, Blue1, Golden Air) are served at Terminal 1. The two terminals are some 200 meters apart. There is a taxi rank at both terminals. To and from the centre, the trip takes around 20 minutes by taxi.

There are several daily connecting flights from Helsinki Airport to Tampere Airport. For those, please consult your airline.

There is also a frequent bus service right from Helsinki airport to the centre (bus station) of Tampere. Check the bus timetable. The bus trip takes approximately two hours.

You can also take a shuttle bus either to the nearby railway stations of Tikkurila or Helsinki. From both, there is an hourly train to the centre of Tampere. Check the train timetable. The train trip takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Bus

Bus connections between the city centre and the Tampere-Pirkkala airport

Paunu Bus nr 61 operates between the Airport Terminal 1 and city centre. As to Terminal 2, there is a bus to the city centre after each arrival, and a bus to the airport from the railway station at approximately two hours before the departure of the flight.

Train

The railway station in Tampere is located in the heart of the city, at the eastern end of Hämeenkatu, the main street. From and to Helsinki, there is a train every hour, during rush hours even more frequently. VR Ltd Finnish Railways.
