Swing Team
Dance Club Swing Team was founded in Tampere,
Finland, in December 1997. It arose out of the need to give
everyone interested an opportunity to learn and to dance rock'n'swing
-dances. Swing Team aims at promoting these dances in Finland by making them
better known among the public and increasing the number
of people dancing them, either as a social form of dance or
with the aim of taking part in dance competitions.
Swing Team is a non-profit organisation that aims to offer
dance instruction to a wide range of people at reasonable
prices. The courses vary from 1-2 day intensive courses
and several weeks' basic courses to longer ones ranging
from beginners to more advanced levels. The club also
arranges other activities such as dance camps, workshops, rock'n'swing
-danceparties and competitions, trips to dance events,
and dance performances. All members are invited to participate.
One of the aims of the club is to make dancing as a hobby
accessible to everyone. By keeping all the fees as low as
possible, Swing Team wishes to give everyone an opportunity
to take part in the groups and events offered.
The dances included in the programme at the moment are:
- Lindy hop: an African-American couple dance that developed
in Harlem, New York, in the 1920's and 1930's; danced to swing music
- Boogie woogie: a couple dance that developed from the 1950's
jive and was established in its present form in the 1980's; mainly
danced to rhythm and blues music
- Fusku: a kind of relaxed form of the jive commonly danced at Finnish
dances in restaurants and dance halls, also known as single time swing.
- Bugg: a swedish rock'n'swing -dance that bases on leading and
following and has a very simple rules.
