Myös suomalaisia tanssijoita ihastuttanut Melanie Stocker saapuu Suomeen valmentamaan viikonlopun verran west coast swingiä ja boogie woogiea.
Tällä kertaa Melaniella on mukanaan loistava tanssija, Euroopan parhaaksi west coast swing -expertiksi tituleerattu Maxence Martin.
Lokakuun viimeisenä viikonloppuna tanssitaan ja pidetään hauskaa - varmista että olet mukana!
Maxence on menestynyt tanssija west coast swingin kotimaassa Yhdysvalloissa. Ohessa liikkuvaa kuvaa hänen tanssistaan:
West coast swing on yksi suomalaisen rock'n'swing-tanssiperheen uusista tulokkaista. Yhdysvalloissa west coast swingiä on tanssittu 1940-luvulta
alkaen.
Kuten kaikki muutkin vakioimattomat tanssit, west coast swing kehittyy koko ajan.
Vahvasti swingaaviin biiseihin suositellaan tanssimaan niihin paremmin sopivia lajeja,
esimerkiksi lindy hopia.
What is West Coast Swing?
West Coast Swing began in California in the 1940's. It was popularized by Arthur Murray Dance Studios in the 1950's. It is danced widely
throughout North America to a broad range of music: Rhythm and Blues, Country Western, Funk, Disco, Rock and Pop. West Coast Swing is a smooth,
sophisticated slot dance consisting of 6, and 8 count patterns with the lady brushing past the man as he leads her in a great variety of turns.
West Coast Swing, the State Dance of California since 1989, is a form of swing dancing that evolved on the West Coast in the early 1940s from the
Lindy Hop and Jitterbug of the 1920s and 1930s. Unlike other forms of swing dancing with circular patterns, West Coast Swing is danced in a linear
slot, allowing a large number of dancers to pack a dance floor. The basic patterns (underarm pass, side pass, push break, whip, etc.
Nobody knows for sure who created West Coast Swing. Some claim the dance evolved by necessity in overcrowded California dance halls during World
War II. Others credit Dean Collins (a legendary Lindy dancer who came to California in the late 1930s and choreographed most of the swing dancing
performed in Hollywood movies during the next two decades) with creating slot patterns to keep dancers within camera range.
What is the difference between east coast swing, west coast swing, and lindy hop?
East coast swing is the basic of all the swing dances and we suggest starting with this dance if you are a beginner. It is danced in a circular
motion and resembles the jitterbug. The west coast swing is California's state dance. The woman dances in a slot and is usually danced to
either blues or country western music. Lindy Hop was invented in the 20's and is similar to the dances of the 20's like the Charleston and
is a blend of other swing dances.
Do people dance West Coast Swing in other places besides California?
Yes. West Coast Swing is very popular throughout the United States and Canada. In Texas, Push (Dallas area) and Whip (Houston area) are
regional forms of swing dancing that are very similar to West Coast Swing. Although the basic patterns have been around for a long time,
the dance continues to evolve as new dance music appears and dancers join the West Coast Swing dance community from other dance backgrounds.
What makes a song West Coast Swing-able?
There is such a broad range of music that can be concidered to be West Coast Swing (rap, R&B, disco, rock-a-billy, contemporary, alternative, pop...),
but one must take a look at each individual song to distinguish whether or not it is good to dance to. can have syncopations in the music or singing
style which allows the oppertunity to play with the music. However, this list of criteria does not necessarily constitute a "Good" swing.
What is the difference between Lindy Hop, East Coast, or any other type of swing dance?
The main difference between the dances arises in the footwork. Many people will say that the footwork for Lindy Hop is more advanced than East Coast
Swing, but there is a good reason for that. Lindy Hop originated in 1920's and 1930's through an evolution of Tap, Jazz, and Charleston. From,
and along with Lindy Hop, a number of other dances evolved, including Carolina Shag, West Coast Swing, Jitterbug, and Balboa. Often different
dance styles are suited to different styles or speeds of music.
