Boogie Night 2008 -leirillä valtavan suosion saanut Melanie Melanie Stocker saapuu Suomeen!
Ever since she can remember, Melanie only wanted to do one thing – to dance.
As a child, she spent her free Wednesday afternoons in front of her neighbour's stereo, listening to Elvis Presley. At the age of 12,
she was allowed to take dance classes and was affected by the Swing virus. Rock-n-Roll, Jive, Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop – that was her world.
She started to dance in Rock-n-Roll competitions, joined the Crazy Shakers in Zurich a few years later and met Boogie Woogie. In the formation
team Crazy Darts she found Reto Gurt - her new dance partner with whom she danced in competitions and shows from then on.
From 1990 to 1995, the two achieved substantial success. European- and World Champions in formation teams, they won 5 Swiss-, 3 European- and
2 World Champion titles as well as 61 tournaments. In that time, they got more and more requests to teach in Switzerland and abroad.
When Reto retired when he got married, Melanie continued instructing with Mario Di Jorio, a friend and former competitor. For 7 years,
they traveled the world and spread their love for Boogie Woogie with a lot of fun and enthusiasm.
In 2004, Melanie decided to put all her eggs in one basket and started her own label "BodyEmotion", under which she offered not only
massages but different dance specific and further education. This included couple and group classes, formation- and show training sessions,
special classes for dance instructors, judges and national teams as well as mental training for competition couples. She took part in camps
organised by Swiss olympic, Youth and sports (governmental sport education) and took classes from well known instructors in different dance styles.
Her work environment covers 15 nations – from Russia to the United States.
Since 2005 she is completely devoted to spreading West Coast Swing in Europe. She spent nearly 4 months in California to study it on-site.
In this period, Olivier Massart, the Belgium vice World champion, came along as an additional dance partner. They were very successful and in a
short time, they established themselves internationally. Since 2008 Melanie works with other partners from different countries as well.
In all the years as a competitor and dance instructor, Melanie gained huge experience. Her references show a part of the achievements of couples
she worked with. She has been teaching different national teams (ao Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, France and Italy) and brought together many
upcoming, young couples in her "Next Generation Camps".
By organizing classes and workshops, she attracts many foreign couples to Switzerland. As a contributor at the WRRC, teacher in Herräng,
show choreographer and teacher at the teachers’ congress she can share a lot of her knowledge. Same goes for the judges training in Russia,
the different ladies workshops or the mental training with competitors.
She is one of the few female teachers who has made her mark in the swing dance world.
West coast swing on yksi suomalaisen rock'n'swing-tanssiperheen uusista tulokkaista. Yhdysvalloissa west coast swingiä on tanssittu 1940-luvulta
alkaen.
Kuten kaikki muutkin vakioimattomat tanssit, west coast swing kehittyy koko ajan.
Vahvasti swingaaviin biiseihin suositellaan tanssimaan niihin paremmin sopivia lajeja,
esimerkiksi lindy hopia.
What is West Coast Swing?
West Coast Swing began in California in the 1940's. It was popularized by Arthur Murray Dance Studios in the 1950's. It is danced widely
throughout North America to a broad range of music: Rhythm and Blues, Country Western, Funk, Disco, Rock and Pop. West Coast Swing is a smooth,
sophisticated slot dance consisting of 6, and 8 count patterns with the lady brushing past the man as he leads her in a great variety of turns.
West Coast Swing, the State Dance of California since 1989, is a form of swing dancing that evolved on the West Coast in the early 1940s from the
Lindy Hop and Jitterbug of the 1920s and 1930s. Unlike other forms of swing dancing with circular patterns, West Coast Swing is danced in a linear
slot, allowing a large number of dancers to pack a dance floor. The basic patterns (underarm pass, side pass, push break, whip, etc.
Nobody knows for sure who created West Coast Swing. Some claim the dance evolved by necessity in overcrowded California dance halls during World
War II. Others credit Dean Collins (a legendary Lindy dancer who came to California in the late 1930s and choreographed most of the swing dancing
performed in Hollywood movies during the next two decades) with creating slot patterns to keep dancers within camera range.
What is the difference between east coast swing, west coast swing, and lindy hop?
East coast swing is the basic of all the swing dances and we suggest starting with this dance if you are a beginner. It is danced in a circular
motion and resembles the jitterbug. The west coast swing is California's state dance. The woman dances in a slot and is usually danced to
either blues or country western music. Lindy Hop was invented in the 20's and is similar to the dances of the 20's like the Charleston and
is a blend of other swing dances.
Do people dance West Coast Swing in other places besides California?
Yes. West Coast Swing is very popular throughout the United States and Canada. In Texas, Push (Dallas area) and Whip (Houston area) are
regional forms of swing dancing that are very similar to West Coast Swing. Although the basic patterns have been around for a long time,
the dance continues to evolve as new dance music appears and dancers join the West Coast Swing dance community from other dance backgrounds.
What makes a song West Coast Swing-able?
There is such a broad range of music that can be concidered to be West Coast Swing (rap, R&B, disco, rock-a-billy, contemporary, alternative, pop...),
but one must take a look at each individual song to distinguish whether or not it is good to dance to. can have syncopations in the music or singing
style which allows the oppertunity to play with the music. However, this list of criteria does not necessarily constitute a "Good" swing.
What is the difference between Lindy Hop, East Coast, or any other type of swing dance?
The main difference between the dances arises in the footwork. Many people will say that the footwork for Lindy Hop is more advanced than East Coast
Swing, but there is a good reason for that. Lindy Hop originated in 1920's and 1930's through an evolution of Tap, Jazz, and Charleston. From,
and along with Lindy Hop, a number of other dances evolved, including Carolina Shag, West Coast Swing, Jitterbug, and Balboa. Often different
dance styles are suited to different styles or speeds of music.
